Japanese futons have always been valued for their great adaptability to different styles and uses. Originally designed to allow a single room to be used in a variety of ways throughout the day, futons are a staple of comfort and practicality.

In Japan, futons are usually laid on tatami floors for sleeping at night and folded up during the day, allowing the bedroom to be used as a living room or even a dining room. Futons are also perfect for permanent use in slatted or tatami base beds.

Our Slim Cotton Futon is made with pure carded cotton. This mattress offer a firm support and can be easily folded or rolled up, and its compact height and firmness make it an ideal mattress for massage or shiatsu treatments.

If you prefer a thicker cotton mattress, we recommend the Medium Cotton Futon or Comfort Cotton Futon.

keyboard_arrow_downCare and maintenance

Futons, being quilted mattresses, do not feature a removable cover. In the event of stains, we recommend using a suitable stain remover for spot treatment. To safeguard your futon from potential stains and dust accumulation, we suggest utilizing a removable cover available in the Accessories section.

Additionally, it is advisable to periodically flip the futon to maintain the density of its cotton layers. To ensure longevity, the futon should be occasionally rolled up and allowed to air out, facilitating the release of any absorbed moisture from the environment. We recommend doing this at least 4 times a year.

If the futon filling contains two layers of coconut fibre, it cannot be folded. In this case, we recommend turning the mattress from time to time to maintain an even density of the cotton and/or wool layers. To air the mattress, you can leave it on the bed with the window open for about an hour, then turn it over and leave it to air for another hour.

Durability of the futon

At Arpel, our commitment to quality holds us back from the use of recycled cotton or wool for the futon batting. Recycled materials often lack the desired fibre quality due to wear and tear and they contains synthetic fibers. Our mattresses are exclusively crafted from high-quality virgin cotton and wool, ensuring durability and longevity. With proper care, Arpel mattresses can maintain their optimal condition for up to 10 years.
