Product features

Tatamis are a must in a Japanese-style home decor. Their organic straw construction provides a unique sensory experience – the fresh, earthy scent coupled with the gentle texture underfoot creates an ambiance of tranquility.  In Japan Tatami mats can be found in any home, and they are becoming increasingly popular also in western homes where creating eco-sustainable, non-toxic environments is becoming ever so important.

This is what sets our high quality tatamis apart from others:

- the double straw weave present on both sides of the mats (lower quality tatamis have the straw weave only on the top, visible surface while the bottom is covered with synthetic materials);

- 100% natural composition made up only of straw without any Styrofoam or similar filler boards

- the 5,5 cm thicknesss which is slightly higher than average

- our Tatamis are quite heavyweight because of the tight weave of straw in the center (32 kg in the size 100x200 cm). This ensures that the mat maintains its form over time and has a life span of up to 20 years

A Tatami mat makes an ideal base for a futon mattress both when placed in our Japanese beds or straight on the floor as with our Beds with Tatami and Futon or our Tatami Sofa Bed. Combine both elements and you will have the right sturdiness and support to guarantee a healthy and restful sleep.

When used as floor covering, our Tatamis not only offer soft and pleasant feel to the touch but are also great temperature regulators due to the isolating effect created by the air molecules captured between the tightly woven straw. Thus Tatami floors will help keep the environment cool in summer and warm in winter.

Materials

Interior (Tatami-Doku): 100% natural rice- and soft rush straw. Our tatamis do not contain layers of polystyrene.

Exterior (Tatami-Omote): Soft rush straw woven and sewn on the edges. The two longer sides of the tatami are framed with black borders.

Care and Maintenance

We advise against using chemical detergents to clean this product. Tatami mats are best cleaned with vacuum cleaner. A cloth moistened with a solution of lukewarm water and vinegar can be used for stains. Tatami is sensitive to moisture because it is made of organic material. If it is placed in a room on the ground floor, it should be raised from the floor to allow for air circulation beneath. It is therefore only suitable for beds or similar structures where it is placed on wooden slats. For rooms on higher floors, the tatami can be placed directly on the floor.

We also recommend lifting the tatami from time to time to check that there is no condensation on the underside, especially in the first year of use.
