Futons are an ancient tradition in Japan and since their arrival in Europe, they have been instantly loved. Today, this time-tested product is more appreciated than ever for its versatility, which allows it to adapt perfectly to our modern living needs. Futon mattresses are not ideal only as beds, they are also often used in convertible sofas, as their special wadding allows them to be folded into different shapes when used as a sofa, and then unfolded into a bed when needed.

The batting of our Comfort Virgin Wool Futon is made from 8 layers of pure virgin wool and offers a comfortable medium firm support. The structure of this material conforms to the shape of the body and feels soft to the touch, while providing firm and stable support. Wool is also naturally antibacterial and highly temperature regulating so it will keep you warm in winter and fresh and dry in summer.

The wool in our futons is carded because this process makes it more stable over time. Carding is a simple mechanical process that involves repeated pulling and combing of the wool to form sheets of even density which result in a smoother mattress with balanced density throughout the entire surface.

If you want a thinner, firmer futon, see the Medium Virgin Wool Futon or the Slim Virgin Wool Futon, which is even thinner and can also be rolled up when needed.

keyboard_arrow_downCare and maintenance

Futons, being quilted mattresses, do not feature a removable cover. In the event of stains, we recommend using a suitable stain remover for spot treatment. To safeguard your futon from potential stains and dust accumulation, we suggest utilizing a removable cover available in the Accessories section.

Additionally, it is advisable to periodically flip the futon to maintain the density of its cotton layers. To ensure longevity, the futon should be occasionally rolled up and allowed to air out, facilitating the release of any absorbed moisture from the environment. We recommend doing this at least 4 times a year.

If the futon filling contains two layers of coconut fibre, it cannot be folded. In this case, we recommend turning the mattress from time to time to maintain an even density of the cotton and/or wool layers. To air the mattress, you can leave it on the bed with the window open for about an hour, then turn it over and leave it to air for another hour.

Durability of the futon

At Arpel, our commitment to quality holds us back from the use of recycled cotton or wool for the futon batting. Recycled materials often lack the desired fibre quality due to wear and tear and they contains synthetic fibers. Our mattresses are exclusively crafted from high-quality virgin cotton and wool, ensuring durability and longevity. With proper care, Arpel mattresses can maintain their optimal condition for up to 10 years.
