Futon mattresses are particularly valued for their versatility. A futon can be used in beds with a slatted or tatami base, as well as on a floor of tatami mats, as is typical in Japan, and that's not all; futons are also often used in convertible sofas because thanks to their special type of wadding, these mattresses can be easily folded into different positions to fit the couch frame and then unfold when the frame is transformed into a bed.
The batting of our Medium Virgin Wool Futon is made from 7 layers of carded pure virgin wool and provides a medium firm support. Wool is greatly appreciated for its excellent temperature-regulating properties. It can help keep you warm in colder temperatures by trapping and retaining heat, and it also wicks away moisture and heat in warmer conditions, keeping you cool. In addition to this, wool is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, mold, and mildew and it provides a moderately firm, yet very comfortable, support.
If you need a thicker futon with a wool batting, we suggest exploring the Comfort Virgin Wool Futon.

Futons, being quilted mattresses, do not feature a removable cover. In the event of stains, we recommend using a suitable stain remover for spot treatment. To safeguard your futon from potential stains and dust accumulation, we suggest utilizing a removable cover available in the Accessories section.
Additionally, it is advisable to periodically flip the futon to maintain the density of its cotton layers. To ensure longevity, the futon should be occasionally rolled up and allowed to air out, facilitating the release of any absorbed moisture from the environment. We recommend doing this at least 4 times a year.
If the futon filling contains two layers of coconut fibre, it cannot be folded. In this case, we recommend turning the mattress from time to time to maintain an even density of the cotton and/or wool layers. To air the mattress, you can leave it on the bed with the window open for about an hour, then turn it over and leave it to air for another hour.
At Arpel, our commitment to quality holds us back from the use of recycled cotton or wool for the futon batting. Recycled materials often lack the desired fibre quality due to wear and tear and they contains synthetic fibers. Our mattresses are exclusively crafted from high-quality virgin cotton and wool, ensuring durability and longevity. With proper care, Arpel mattresses can maintain their optimal condition for up to 10 years.
