Japanese futons are highly valued for their exceptional versatility and adaptability to different styles and uses. Originally designed to allow a single room to be used in a variety of ways throughout the day, futons embody the art of combining comfort and practicality.

In Japan, futons are traditionally laid on tatami floors for sleeping at night. During the day, they are folded up and stored in special cupboards, transforming the bedroom into a multifunctional space that can be used as a living room or even a dining room.

Futons are also ideal for permanent use on slatted or tatami beds.

The Cotton and Latex 8 Futon consists of 6 layers of carded cotton with a central layer of 8 cm natural latex. The result is a mattress of medium ergonomic support: the presence of several layers of cotton ensures breathability and thermoregulation, while the soft natural latex core balances the composition, providing comfort and ergonomics. Latex also preserves the elasticity of the futon over time, as it always retains its original height and ability to adapt to the shape of the body without compressing over time.

If you are looking for a slightly thinner and firmer futon, try our Cotton and Latex 4 Futon.

keyboard_arrow_downCare and maintenance

Futons, being quilted mattresses, do not feature a removable cover. In the event of stains, we recommend using a suitable stain remover for spot treatment. To safeguard your futon from potential stains and dust accumulation, we suggest utilizing a removable cover available in the Accessories section.

Additionally, it is advisable to periodically flip the futon to maintain the density of its cotton layers. To ensure longevity, the futon should be occasionally rolled up and allowed to air out, facilitating the release of any absorbed moisture from the environment. We recommend doing this at least 4 times a year.

If the futon filling contains two layers of coconut fibre, it cannot be folded. In this case, we recommend turning the mattress from time to time to maintain an even density of the cotton and/or wool layers. To air the mattress, you can leave it on the bed with the window open for about an hour, then turn it over and leave it to air for another hour.

Durability of the futon

At Arpel, our commitment to quality holds us back from the use of recycled cotton or wool for the futon batting. Recycled materials often lack the desired fibre quality due to wear and tear and they contains synthetic fibers. Our mattresses are exclusively crafted from high-quality virgin cotton and wool, ensuring durability and longevity. With proper care, Arpel mattresses can maintain their optimal condition for up to 10 years.
