Originally, the zabuton—essentially a small futon—was a symbol of power in aristocratic homes and was used to welcome guests. Today, it is primarily associated with meditation but serves various purposes. In modern Japanese homes, the zabuton is often used as part of the interior decor or as a seating cushion during meals and daily activities.
For meditation, the zabuton is placed beneath the Zafu cushion to lift the body off the ground and provide soft support for the legs, knees, and ankles.
