Product features

The Tatami Futon Sofa Bed combines two tatami mats, two futons and four pure cotton cushions in a contemporary and versatile reinterpretation of Japanese simplicity. The natural scent of rice straw, the soft texture of cotton and the clean, low lines create a relaxed and inviting space that can be freely transformed throughout the day from a four-seater sofa into a corner sofa, a single bed or a double bed.

At its base are our traditional tatami mats, handcrafted from woven rice straw. The woven surface on both the top and underside is a distinctive feature of their high-quality construction. Naturally breathable and insulating, the tatami provide a comfortable separation from the floor while creating an ideal base for the futons, allowing air to circulate beneath them.

Resting on the tatami are our pure cotton futons, thick and structured to provide the comfort and support needed for everyday use. Multiple layers of dense carded cotton create a balanced, semi-firm and even sleeping surface. For a more personalised feel, the futons can be configured with a 3 cm latex core for more responsive, ergonomic support, or a 3 cm coconut fibre core for a firmer and more breathable surface.

Completing the sofa are four pure cotton cushions, coordinated with the futons to create a soft and comfortable backrest. With no fixed position, they can be moved, stacked and arranged freely to provide the right support while adapting naturally to the different configurations of the sofa.

Colour customisation

The futons are available in a wide range of colours. You can customise your Tatami Futon Sofa Bed by combining different futon colours. Of the four cushions included in the price, two will be the same colour as the first futon and two will be the colour of the second futon.

On request, it is possible to choose you own colour scheme for the four backrest cushions, for example they can be in a single colour or even in colours different from those chosen for the futons. For customised combinations, please specify your preference in the ‘Product customisation’ field.

Tatami

For regular cleaning, we recommend using a vacuum cleaner. For occasional stains, wipe the surface with a soft cloth lightly moistened with a solution of lukewarm water and vinegar. We do not recommend using chemical detergents on this product.

Tatami mats are made from natural rice straw and are therefore sensitive to moisture. If they are used in rooms where moisture may accumulate, such as ground-floor rooms or spaces with limited ventilation, they should be raised off the floor to allow air to circulate underneath. For this reason, they are best used on beds or other raised structures. In well-ventilated rooms on upper floors, tatami can be placed directly on the floor.

We also recommend lifting the tatami occasionally, especially during the first year of use, to check that no condensation has formed on the underside.

Futon

When first removing the futon from its packaging, we recommend folding or rolling it in the opposite direction to the way it was packed. This helps the cover and filling regain their original shape. We also recommend alternating between turning the futon over and rotating it from head to foot every couple of weeks during the first few months. Once the cotton has settled evenly, this can be done less frequently.

The futon cover is not removable, as it is stitched directly to the cotton filling. In the event of stains, we recommend treating the affected area with a suitable fabric stain remover. To protect your futon from stains, dust, and everyday wear, we recommend using an additional removable cover, available in the Accessories section.

Tatami

Exterior (Omote): woven rush straw on both the top and bottom sides, a sign of high quality

Interior (Doku): 100% natural rice straw. Our tatami mats do not contain layers of polystyrene.

Edging on the long sides (Heri): Black fabric 70% cotton and 30% polyester.

The tatami mat creates a stable, naturally breathable, and temperature-regulating base, which promotes air circulation under the futon and helps keep the bed dry and comfortable in all seasons. Its distinctive straw scent adds a pleasant sensory dimension, evoking the tranquility of Japanese interiors.

Our tatami mats are handmade in China, in specialized workshops that uphold a long tradition of tatami and woven straw products. The quality of the product is immediately recognizable by the double woven rush covering, present on both the top and bottom sides. The 5.5 cm thickness and high density of compressed straw (up to 32 kg for a 100 x 200 cm tatami) ensure stability and durability.

Futon

Cover: cotton

Filling: carded cotton

Optional addition: 3 cm core layer of latex or coconut fiber

The futon completes the system with a pure cotton filling, a naturally breathable and hypoallergenic material that promotes a pleasant microclimate for rest. Its structure offers firm and uniform support, helping the spine maintain natural alignment during sleep, without sacrificing comfort. For those seeking even more personalized comfort, you can choose a version with a 3 cm core of latex, which makes the futon more elastic and comfortable, or coconut fiber, for greater breathability and even firmer and more stable support.
