Product features

The Aiko Extra-Wide Japanese Bed with Tatami combines minimalist design with a striking, solid structure, featuring a sturdy 9 cm frame that showcases the natural beauty of lamellar beech wood. Rice straw tatami mats bring a sense of balance and harmony, turning the bedroom into a serene haven for shared well-being. Designed for the whole family, it provides generous space and freedom of movement, creating a shared sense of closeness and comfort.

The wide feet with a 45° bevel remain a signature detail of the line, blending seamlessly with the low, open frame that keeps even larger sizes feeling light and airy. Positioned atop the rigid beech slatted base, the tatami mats create a stable, breathable surface, perfect for traditional futons or thicker memory foam and spring mattresses.

To highlight the tatami, you can choose a bed slightly wider than your mattress, leaving the mats visible at the sides and creating a handy surface for items like a phone or a favourite book. For a view of the tatami from the front, you can opt for an internal length greater than 200 cm. Because the tatami mats have a fixed length of 200 cm, a wooden filler profile will be placed on the slats next to the tatami at the head of the bed.

Finishings

In the product configuration options, you can choose untreated beech, for a natural and authentic look, or opt for one of our eco-friendly, water-based finishes, developed to enhance the wood grain while protecting the surface over time. Our palette, inspired by different wood species, allows the piece to integrate naturally and elegantly into a wide range of interiors. Free samples are available on request, so you can see the finishes in person.

Beyond our standard range, you may also select a custom RAL colour by providing the numerical code. In this case, we prepare a dedicated sample and send it to you for approval before proceeding with the final finish of the furniture.

Our tatami mats are made from 100% natural straw with no synthetic fillings, featuring a visible weave on both the top and bottom that reflects their high-quality craftsmanship.

The straw releases a subtle, natural scent, creating a calm and welcoming atmosphere. The dense weave provides excellent breathability and thermal insulation, keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter, and helping maintain an ideal microclimate. The firm surface supports the body evenly, encouraging proper posture and relieving muscle tension.

To showcase the weave aesthetically, we recommend pairing the bed with a slightly narrower mattress, leaving a portion of the tatami exposed on either side.

To complete the bed, you can add a wooden headboard from the configuration options and bedside tables, a futon mattress and dedicated bed linen from the ‘Accessories’ section.

Here follows more detailed information about accessories that integrate directly with the bed frame, affecting its configuration and function.

Headboards

Zen wooden headboard: In the configuration options, you can choose to add a wooden headboard to the frame. It is available in a straight design or with a tapered top featuring a diagonal cut. For single beds, we recommend choosing the straight version for widths up to 100 cm. Please note that adding the headboard requires screws, so the bed will no longer be entirely metal-free.

Futon headboard:  As an alternative to the integrated wooden headboard, you can also choose the futon headboard from the ‘Accessories’ section. It consists of a futon cushion suspended from the wall by a wooden rod, available in the same finishes as the frame. Futon cushions come in a wide range of colours.

Futon

The tatami base creates a continuous, breathable surface that provides uniform support across the entire sleeping area. Thanks to this, the bed can be paired with any type of futon, from the thinnest pure cotton models to thicker versions with more substantial fillings, including latex and/or coir. The bed is also fully compatible with traditional mattresses, such as memory foam or pocket spring models.

If varnished, the wood can be cleaned with a sponge dampened with a little water and, if necessary, a specific wood cleaner. If left untreated, the wood can only be vacuumed or dusted. It should absolutely not be wet, to prevent the surface from becoming rough. If this happens, however, the surface can be smoothed again by sanding it with a gentle sandpaper (180 grit).

The tatami mat can be cleaned with a dry cloth or even a vacuum cleaner to remove dust, even from the middle of the weave. These mats must always be kept completely dry, so it's advisable to check them occasionally in the colder months to ensure they aren't absorbing moisture. If the environment in which they are located is very humid, simply airing them may not be enough; in this case, we recommend using a dehumidifier.
