Product features

The Aiko Extra-Wide Japanese Bed with Tatami combines minimalist design with a striking, solid structure, featuring a sturdy 9 cm frame that showcases the natural beauty of lamellar beech wood. Rice straw tatami mats bring a sense of balance and harmony, turning the bedroom into a serene haven for shared well-being. Designed for the whole family, it provides generous space and freedom of movement, creating a shared sense of closeness and comfort.

The wide feet with a 45° bevel remain a signature detail of the line, blending seamlessly with the low, open frame that keeps even larger sizes feeling light and airy. Positioned atop the rigid beech slatted base, the tatami mats create a stable, breathable surface, perfect for traditional futons or thicker memory foam and spring mattresses.

To highlight the tatami, you can choose a bed slightly wider than your mattress, leaving the mats visible at the sides and creating a handy surface for items like a phone or a favourite book. For a view of the tatami from the front, you can opt for an internal length greater than 200 cm. Because the tatami mats have a fixed length of 200 cm, a wooden filler profile will be placed on the slats next to the tatami at the head of the bed.

Available in widths from 210 to 270 cm, the Aiko bed offers exceptional flexibility for a variety of sleeping arrangements. It can accommodate a standard double mattress, a double mattress paired with a single mattress, or three single mattresses to create a generous sleeping space for families and shared sleeping.

As needs evolve over time, the layout can be easily adapted. Removing one of the single mattresses transforms a 3 sleeper bed into a spacious double bed, revealing more of the tatami surface and giving the design a distinctly different character.

Internal width: customizable between 210 and 270 cm.

Internal length: customizable between 200 and 220 cm. Tatamis have a fixed length of 200 cm, so a wooden extension beam is added next to the tatamis for greater bed lengths. During assembly, this beam can be placed at the head or foot of the bed.

Bed height: customizable between 12 and 45 cm

External size: 18 cm more than the inner size. Example: if you configure 210x200 cm big bed, the external dimensions will be 228x218 cm.

External size with a headboard: the external length does not vary with the addition of a wooden headboard as this accessory does not protrude past the bed frame.

Finishings

In the product configuration options, you can choose untreated beech for a natural, authentic look, or opt for one of our eco-friendly, water-based finishes, designed to enhance the wood grain and protect the surface over time. Our colour palette ranges from a transparent finish, through a variety of natural wood shades, to white, grey and black, making it easy to integrate the furniture into different interiors and styles. To help you choose, we offer a free sample delivery service, allowing you to see the quality and grain of the wood in person and compare the different finishes. To request samples, contact us and let us know which colours you’d like to see.

In addition to our standard range, you can also choose a custom RAL colour to match each piece precisely to your existing furnishings or the requirements of a specific interior design project. In this case, we’ll prepare a sample in your chosen colour and send it to you for approval before applying the finish to your furniture.

keyboard_arrow_downTatami

Our tatami mats are made from 100% natural straw with no synthetic fillings, featuring a visible weave on both the top and bottom that reflects their high-quality craftsmanship.

The straw releases a subtle, natural scent, creating a calm and welcoming atmosphere. The dense weave provides excellent breathability and thermal insulation, keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter, and helping maintain an ideal microclimate. The firm surface supports the body evenly, encouraging proper posture and relieving muscle tension.

To showcase the weave aesthetically, we recommend pairing the bed with a slightly narrower mattress, leaving a portion of the tatami exposed on either side.

keyboard_arrow_downCare and maintenance

If varnished, the wood can be cleaned with a sponge dampened with a little water and, if necessary, a specific wood cleaner. If left untreated, the wood can only be vacuumed or dusted. It should absolutely not be wet, to prevent the surface from becoming rough. If this happens, however, the surface can be smoothed again by sanding it with a gentle sandpaper (180 grit).

The tatami mat can be cleaned with a dry cloth or even a vacuum cleaner to remove dust, even from the middle of the weave. These mats must always be kept completely dry, so it's advisable to check them occasionally in the colder months to ensure they aren't absorbing moisture. If the environment in which they are located is very humid, simply airing them may not be enough; in this case, we recommend using a dehumidifier.
