Product features

Tatamis are a must in a Japanese-style home decor. Their organic straw construction provides a unique sensory experience, combining a fresh, earthy scent with a gentle texture underfoot to create an atmosphere of tranquility.  In Japan Tatami mats can be found in any home, and they are becoming increasingly popular also in western homes where creating eco-sustainable, non-toxic environments is becoming ever so important.

This is what sets our high quality tatamis apart from others:

- the double straw weave present on both sides of the mats (lower quality tatamis have the straw weave only on the top, visible surface while the bottom is covered with synthetic materials);

- 100% natural composition made up only of straw without any Styrofoam or similar filler boards

- the 5,5 cm thicknesss which is slightly higher than average

- our Tatamis are quite heavyweight because of the tight weave of straw in the center (32 kg in the size 100x200 cm). This ensures that the mat maintains its form over time and has a life span of up to 20 years

A Tatami mat makes an ideal base for a futon mattress both when placed in our Japanese beds or straight on the floor, with or without the optional wooden frame. Combine both elements and you will have the right sturdiness and support to guarantee a healthy and restful sleep.

When used as floor covering, our Tatamis not only offer soft and pleasant feel to the touch but are also great temperature regulators due to the isolating effect created by the air molecules captured between the tightly woven straw. Thus Tatami floors will help keep the environment cool in summer and warm in winter.

Examples of tatami combinations:

Here are some combinations you can create with multiple tatami mats. Most of these options are available to buy as sets from here: tatami combinations

Our tatamis come in fixed sizes but we can still provide custom Tatami floorings completed with fillings in beech wood for the parts that cannot be covered by the mats.

Please contact us if you want a customized Tatami floor covering and indicate the dimensions of the area that needs to be covered.

For regular cleaning, we recommend using a vacuum cleaner. For occasional stains, wipe the surface with a soft cloth lightly moistened with a solution of lukewarm water and vinegar. We do not recommend using chemical detergents on this product.

Tatami mats are made from natural rice straw and are therefore sensitive to moisture. If they are used in rooms where moisture may accumulate, such as ground-floor rooms or spaces with limited ventilation, they should be raised off the floor to allow air to circulate underneath. For this reason, they are best used on beds or other raised structures. In well-ventilated rooms on upper floors, tatami can be placed directly on the floor.

We also recommend lifting the tatami occasionally, especially during the first year of use, to check that no condensation has formed on the underside.

keyboard_arrow_downMaterials and origin

Made entirely from natural straw, the tatami mats offer a unique sensory experience. The fresh scent of straw and the delicate woven texture underfoot contribute to an atmosphere of calm and well-being. Their internal structure, filled with natural air pockets, makes them highly breathable and naturally insulating, helping maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the year.

The quality of our tatami mats is immediately recognizable by the double woven rush covering on both the top and bottom surfaces, a hallmark of premium-quality tatami. Their generous 5.5 cm thickness and the high density of the compressed straw core (up to 32 kg for a 100 × 200 cm tatami) provide exceptional stability and durability over time.

Exterior (Omote): woven rush straw on both the top and bottom.

Filling (Doku): 100% natural rice straw.

Edge along the long sides (Heri): Black fabric 70% cotton and 30% polyester.

Manufacture: our tatami mats are handmade in China, in specialist workshops that carry on a long tradition of crafting tatami mats and woven straw products.
